Sian Ka’an means “where the heavens begin” and it’s a crucially important area for conservation in southern Mexico. It was declared a Natural Protected Area in 1986, and since then it has become one of the most important natural reserves in Mexico, recognized by the UN as a World Heritage Site.

Located just 10 kilometers away from Tulum, this 528-hectare Biosphere Reserve comprises 7 different land ecosystems home to iconic endangered species such as jaguars and spider monkeys, as well as reptiles, migratory birds and small endemic mammals.

Off the coast of this protected land, an important fraction of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System is a safe haven for sea turtles, dolphins, and hundreds of species of sea creatures. Consequently, Sian Ka’an is a vital site for the preservation of the diversity of the Mayan region.

Sadly, this magical area has experienced some trouble in the past few weeks. Unusually dry weather and irresponsible human activities have caused wildfires that have consumed significant portions of Sian Ka’an. The local government and NGOs have worked together to combat these fires and bring balance once more to the reserve.

Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve provides us with clean fresh water, sucks vast amounts of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, offers a safe habitat for countless species of plants and animals, and preserves the natural systems upon which we as humans depend. It is also crucial for local communities whose economy is based on the sustainable tourism options they offer in the reserve.
